Welcome to Candle Making 101!
A few years ago, I took my family to a tourist site at an old monastery in Canada. It was actually called Saint Marie among the Hurons and it is very close to the Martyrs Shrine in Ontario. While we were at Saint Marie among the Hurons, we came across a demonstration of how people used to make candles. The children were invited to make candles of their own and it was interesting to see how it was done.
If you aren’t familiar with the process, candle makers of yesteryears used to take a wick tied to a small piece of wood, a splinter really, and swirl the wick in a big cauldron of wax for a few seconds at the time. The process was to swirl the wick, remove it from the wax, allow it to harden for a few seconds and then swirl it again. The key is to create an even layer of wax on each previous layer without melting the candle again.
After about 10 minutes, both of my children had made a candle about the size of a birthday candle. We were finished and there was no way that we were going to make anything bigger than that misshapen birthday candle. Still, it was an experience but in the end, I am glad that candle making has come a long way.
