Candle Making 101

Candle Making Supplies

Every craft, regardless of how easy it is, requires supplies. You will need scissors for cutting, glue for securing things and you will need a few tools that are specific for the craft. Candle making is no different and if you are interested in creating your own candles, you will need to purchase a few items.

The Hardware:

Yes, there are a few hardware items that you will need to make you own candles. I have listed them below for greater ease.

  • Double Boiler: This is a must have if you are going to be making a large amount of candles. You can purchase double boilers at many stores or you can make your own by using an old pot and a coffee tin. You should place several inches of water in the pot and float the tin in the center.  *Alternative: A deep fryer with a thermometer or any type of wax melting pot that you do not have to use on a stove. This is recommended if you are making a large quality of wax since melting wax on a stove can be very dangerous.
  • One rule of thumb to follow is to purchase a jar with thick glass that can withstand the heat of the wax.

  • Thermometer: Use a candy making thermometer or one specifically designed for candle making. This is to ensure that you never overheat the wax and it will make the process much easier.
  • Pouring Pot: This is not a must but it should be since it provides you with a safe way to pour your wax into molds. It also provides you with a place to mix dyes and fragrances into your melted wax. I would strongly recommend purchasing a pouring pot.
  • Digital Scales: Digital scales are the best choice when it comes to measuring. Many recipes call for weight instead of metric measurements and for this reason; the digital scale will provide you with the best results. Instead of measuring by the cup, you can measure dye, wax and essential oils with a digital scale.
  • Wooden Spoons: Purchase a set of wooden spoons for candle making specifically. They will get pretty waxy by the time you have finished your first candle so it is best to keep them separate from your other cooking utensils.
  • Hammer: Although you don’t necessarily need it, a hammer will help break apart the wax for you and make it much easier to measure and use.
  • Molds: There are tons of different types of molds out there and you can either purchase them or make your own.
  • Containers: Depending on the type of candle, you may need containers to make them. Jar candles and the like will need glass jars. One rule of thumb to follow is to purchase a jar with thick glass that can withstand the heat of the wax.
  • Safety Gear: Wax can bubble and splash and it is important to use safety gear when you make candles. Purchase a good pair of safety goggles, the ones with a band work best since they won’t slip off. Also make sure you have a first aid kit available and a fire extinguisher as well.

The Supplies:

Now that you have the hardware, you will also need the supplies. Below I have listed a few essential items that you will need.

  • Wax: The type of wax really depends on the type of candles you are making. If you are making simple traditional candles, paraffin wax is all you need. However, if you are making other kinds, you will need the right wax; gel wax for gel candles, beeswax, etc.
  • Wicks: If you think all wicks are created equally, then you will be very surprised when you go out to purchase your wicks. You can buy them pre-cut or in a roll and there are several types. Generally, cotton wicks will work for most of your candle making needs but if you are making gel candles, you will need a zinc core wick.
  • Wax Dye: This is optional but most people prefer to color their candle wax and many candle makers prefer to have a large assortment of colors to draw from. Make sure that you use a dye that works with wax or if you prefer, a crayon will often provide you with all the color you need in your melted wax.
  • Essential Oils: Again, another item that is optional but if you decide to make scented candles, there are a large selection of fragrances to choose from.

Now that you have everything, you should be well on your way to creating beautiful hand-made candles. Browse through our site for some wonderful how-tos.
